FOUR DAY HEALTH & SAFETY COMPETENT PERSON COURSE

The Management of Health and Safety at Work Regulations 1999 (Regulation 7) requires all
employers to appoint one or more competent persons to assist them in taking the measures necessary for compliance with the relevant Health and Safety legislation and Part II of the Fire Precautions (Workplace) Regulations 1997. The employer is solely responsible for the appointment of the ‘Competent Person’ and for ensuring that the appointee is capable of carrying out the task.

NORTH EAST SAFETY TRAINING SERVICES can provide employees with the necessary skills to undertake the task of ‘Competent Person’. This popular course is run over 4 days at a prestigious venue and upon successful completion and subject to gaining the required pass marks in the short, multiple choice question examinations, will provide the delegate with the necessary knowledge and certification to carry out the duties of ‘Competent Person’ and provide the required Health & Safety Assistance to his / her employer. A full set of comprehensive notes is provided for each delegate.

Day One-Basic Health & Safety Certificate:
Health & Safety at Work; Health & Safety Law; Accident Prevention; Risk Assessment; First Aid at Work;
Personal Protective Equipment; Hazardous Substances; Ergonomics and Workstation Design; Manual Handling and Noise at Work. Followed by a short examination comprising of 30 multiple choice questions.

Day Two-Principles of CoSHH and Principles of Manual Handling:
Definition and types of substance hazardous to health in the workplace; Health effects of hazardous
substances in the workplace; CoSHH assessments and control options; Responsibilities imposed by the Control of Substances Hazardous to Health Regulations. Followed by a short examination comprising of 20 questions.
The process of Manual Handling in the workplace; Manual Handling injuries and the activities that cause them; Manual Handling assessment and control options; Responsibilities imposed by the Manual Handling Operations Regulations 1992. Followed by a short examination comprising of 20 questions.

Day Three-Risk Assessment Principles & Practice:
General introduction to Risk Assessment; The principles of Risk Assessment; The legislation applying to Risk Assessment; Risk Assessment in Practice a session linking the theoretical knowledge obtained earlier in this
session to practical examples and workplace activities; A summary of the days learning and assessment of the students ability to assess risk. It should be noted that this qualification is concerned with general rather than
specific assessment of risk such as manual handling and hazardous substances. Followed by team exercises, video and discussion.

Day Four-Fire Safety and The Management of Health and Safety
Introduction to The Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005. Topics covered include; The Fire Triangle; Fire Spread; Fire Detection Systems; Means of Escape;
Fire-fighting Equipment and Procedure; Fire Hazards and Risk Assessment; Evacuation and Fire Plans. Duty of Fire Wardens. Followed by group exercises, video and discussion. An introduction to the Management of Health and Safety Regulations 1999 and HSG(65). This session provides an insight on how to set up your basic health and safety management system in the workplace.
